一般认为，译者至少要通晓两种语言，但这还远远不够。要成为一名称职的译者，还必须熟谙两种文化，这样才能意会”弦外之音”。译者应该能够领会原语文本中有意含蓄的内容，并把它们恰如其分地在译文中表达出来。实际上，许多译文过于冗长，因为译者认为他们必须把原语文本中的每个词或每一个暗含都毫无遗漏地表达出来。
